Chilling Efficiency: Cold Climate Heat Pumps in Chicago’s Deep Freeze.
As the arctic blast of winter 2023 descended upon Chicago, plunging temperatures to a bone-numbing -10°F, one question echoed through homes and businesses: “Can heat pumps handle this?” This presentation delves into the real-world experience of Chicago residents who dared to ditch fossil fuels and embrace cold climate heat pumps (CCHPs) in one of the Windy City’s coldest winters on record.

Speaker Bio

Michael Ihesiaba is the Senior Director, Engineering at Elevate, a nonprofit organization that designs and implements programs that reduce costs, protect people and the environment, and ensure the benefits of the clean energy economy reach those who need them most. In this role, Michael leads Elevate's Engineering team in supporting the organization's engineering and technical expertise needs. The Engineering team conducts energy assessments, conducts energy modeling, and provides technical consulting for Elevate's programs, projects, and utility programs that deliver services to a wide range of buildings, including commercial nonprofit, multifamily, and public buildings.
Prior to joining Elevate, Michael worked with ICF overseeing the Commonwealth Edison streetlighting and custom programs. In prior roles, Michael also held positions with Consolidated Edison, NY and National Grid, NY. In his free time, Michael enjoys woodworking, weightlifting, and watching movies.
