Evolution of Green Building Standards & Goals

The standard for what is a sustainable, high-performance building has changed a great deal over the years and continues to do so. There have been shifts in goals from achieving energy efficiency, to Net Zero Energy, and now Net Zero Carbon. This presentation will cover the various goals, standards, and rating systems in place for future green buildings. It will offer a summary of various building performance standard like ASHRAE codes, International Green Construction Code, guidance from the New Buildings Institute, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ratings, International Living Futures Institute programs, and more. Most importantly it will map what we need to do today, to reach the goals for 2050.

Part 1: Do you ever find yourself hesitant to attend a networking event because you aren’t sure it is worth your time? Networking is an invaluable tool and networking opportunities are full of possibilities. This session is co-moderated by two CWEEL board members with the aim of equipping participants with tools to make the most of networking opportunities. Immediately following this session will be a second portion where participants can stay and put the tips into practice.

Part 2: Doing the Work - Guided Networking Exercises

Part 2: In this CWEEL session led by board members Deborah Lenny and Kiersten Washle, participants will be led through a series of networking exercises. It will be an interactive session. Participants may want to bring their phones or laptops. Elevator pitches, making the most of LinkedIn, and more will be discussed and practiced.

Speaker Bio

In all things, Kiersten’s goal is to bring the built environment into greater harmony with our natural one. Kiersten is based in Virginia and works in the Sustainable Operations team at JLL where she develops sustainability solutions for Enterprise accounts. Prior to that, Kiersten worked with the CMTA where she conducted analysis to understand the effects of building design decisions on KPIs such as energy use intensity and carbon footprint. Her work contributed to the construction of 5 net zero energy buildings in New England, including the first net zero school in the state of Connecticut. She has completed multiple sustainability and decarbonization master plans for universities and towns totaling more than 2.5 million square feet.
Kiersten holds a BS in Systems Engineering and Sustainability as well as an MS in Engineering Management, both from George Washington University. Additionally, she has an MBA from the Quantic School of Business. She holds a C.E.M. accreditation, Living Futures Accreditation, is a LEED Green Associate, and is an ActiveScore AP.
