Industrial Decarbonization Using Natural Refrigerant Heat Pumps with Thermal Storage

CIMCO will address Decarbonization for Industries with a focus on carbon neutral heating solutions for industries, emphasizing the role of natural refrigerant heat pumps and thermal storage as the key tool used in reducing fossil fuel consumption. We will discuss heat pumps and their applications in industrial settings and examine the potential of utilizing them in thermal energy networks or district energy systems as a decarbonization accelerant.The presentation will highlight the efficiency gains of natural refrigerants over synthetic refrigerants, the process of retrofitting chillers to supply domestic water or building heat through heat reclaim, and the boosting of temperatures with a steam and hot water heat pump. We will also discuss the performance curve of a heat pump, and how the source and sink temperatures impact the Coefficient of Performance (COP). Additionally, we will delve into the concept of district energy, its advantages, and its evolution from inception to the present day. The webinar will conclude with an overview of thermal storage solutions, detailing their benefits, and their role in reducing capital (capex) and operational (opex) costs while serving as a tool for decarbonization.

Speaker Bio

Amal Jina’s expertise in mechanical engineering spans close to 20 years. She started her career in the aerospace industry for a span of about 6 years, and has been in the energy industry ever since. At CIMCO, she collaborates closely with clients, tailoring customized solutions to decarbonize energy needs, which leads to the client’s increased profitability and alignment to achieve Net-Zero targets. She approaches solutions holistically, incorporating energy conservation, thermal solutions, and renewables. She also looks at a project from a financial perspective, incorporating key metrics, including NPV and cash flow, to turn emissions into opportunities.
Amal holds her bachelor’s degree in Applied Science and Engineering and a master’s degree in Mechanical engineering with a certification in Energy Systems from attending the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto. In addition, she is also a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) through AEE and CIET.
