Abstract:

This presentation will showcase the application of free DOE-2 energy modeling software to explore decarbonization strategies for both new and existing buildings, focusing on a case study at Volvo Group Trucks. The study leverages eQUEST Modelling Software to evaluate space heating options such as hydrogen boilers, electric boilers, air source heat pumps, and ground source heat pumps against traditional natural gas boilers. This aligns with Volvo Group’s commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative and its goal for net-zero emissions by 2050, primarily targeting Scope 1 emissions from on-site combustion.

The analysis includes factors such as energy demand, consumption, first costs, and operating costs for these space heating scenarios. Benefits and concerns of each technology are explored to understand cost implications and technological barriers. The study also acknowledges potential financial incentives such as the Inflation Reduction Act, as well as local incentives from states and utilities.

This case study provides a replicable model for other facilities aiming to balance environmental and economic considerations in their decarbonization efforts.
