Microgrids and Power Quality- a tutorial on how to marry the two for greater efficiency and deployment

Track E: Alternative and Renewable Energy

Session E4: Resilient Energy Systems

Day 3  9:30 am

Abstract:

Microgrids provide a much-needed solution for resiliency, combining renewable energy sources, and the smart management of loads. This tutorial explores the intelligence, the limitations, and the opportunities of microgrids. Through case studies, we explore how their effectiveness can be greatly enhanced by addressing power quality challenges to ensure equipment longevity, greater efficiency, cleaner power and lower cost of operation. Traditional responses offer a fragmented approach to address issues such as harmonics, load unbalance, voltage and frequency deviations, and other transients causing loads to degrade over time.

We propose a unified integrated Software Defined Electricity (SDE) approach that synchronizes electrical parameters across the network, creating a balanced system where impedance matching resolves frequency control without additional mechanisms. This unified approach simultaneously optimizes load balance, waveform distortion, reactive power, and impedance across all phases, elevating power quality ratings from 30-40% to over 80% while reducing energy losses by 30%. The resulting benefits include extended equipment lifespan, increased renewable integration capacity, improved system resilience, better load performance, reduced maintenance costs, and fewer outages. Addressing root causes rather than symptoms allows microgrids to fulfill their promise as truly sustainable energy systems.
