Abstract:
| In February 2021, Chile published the Energy Efficiency Law, which requires the implementation of an Energy Management System (EnMS) for companies with annual energy consumption over 50 tera calories (~55 GWh) from 2024. The main elements of this law are: 1. Companies with sales over USD 38 million and more than 200 employees must report to the Ministry of Energy the energy consumption (electricity, gas, fuels, biomass, etc.) every year. 2. The Ministry of Energy develops the list with the companies obligated to implement an EnMs (updated two times in a year). 3. The EnMS must be certified ISO 50001 or meet the requirements established by the Ministry of Energy, which includes an external audit. 4. Every year the companies must report to the Ministry of Energy, the state of the EnMS, including the energy performance improvement and energy efficiency projects. Currently there are about 300 companies with mandatory EnMS in Chile, creatin a big challenge for energy managers, consultants and certification bodies. |
