Session H1: Energy Basics 101

September 17, 2025 | 3:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Heat Pumps 101

As the push for decarbonization accelerates, the electrification of heating and domestic hot water (DHW) systems in existing multifamily buildings presents both opportunities and unique challenges. This session will share real-world insights from our experience in designing, installing, and commissioning central heat pump systems in affordable multifamily buildings, with a focus on cold-climate performance and space-constrained environments.
We will explore key technical and logistical hurdles encountered in retrofitting existing buildings, including managing limited mechanical space, integrating with legacy infrastructure, and ensuring system efficiency during extreme weather conditions. Through case studies and real-world data, we will highlight strategies we have employed to overcome these obstacles—such as innovative system design approaches, equipment selection tailored to site-specific constraints, and optimization techniques for performance and occupant comfort.

Attendees will gain practical knowledge on how to approach multifamily heat pump retrofits effectively, understanding not only the technical aspects but also considerations related to true cost, project timelines, and long-term operational success. This session aims to equip energy professionals with actionable strategies to advance decarbonization goals in the multifamily sector.

Speaker Bio

Md Mamun is a highly accomplished Energy Efficiency Engineer at the Association for Energy Affordability (AEA), NY, with nearly 11 years of experience in the energy industry. He has deep expertise in HVAC systems, heat pump system design and commissioning, and distributed energy resources such as Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems.
Since 2020, he has led critical projects involving system design, specification development, and commissioning for both new construction and retrofits. His work includes advancing energy efficiency under Local Law 87, LL97 compliance, and managing key initiatives for the AMEEP program.

Prior to his role at AEA, Md Mamun served as Lead Mechanical Project Engineer at Centrica Business Solutions, where he played a pivotal role in the development and execution of complex CHP and energy efficiency performance contract projects. His broad technical expertise spans energy modeling, mechanical system design, HVAC and CHP commissioning, solar PV system design, and load analysis.

Md Mamun holds a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from The City College of New York and is an active member of ASHRAE, USGBC, and the Association of Energy Engineer.
