Abstract:
The evolving dynamics of energy markets necessitate innovative approaches to integrate Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into Alberta’s Restructured Energy Market (REM). This presentation aims to outline a comprehensive policy framework that supports the effective dispatch and participation of DER in REM, enhancing the system’s resilience and efficiency.
Key topics include the technology and data requirements essential for real-time DER management, such as advanced metering, data analytics platforms, and secure communication channels. We will explore the diverse products and services DER can offer, ranging from emergency backup power to non-wires alternatives (NWA), and examine compensation mechanisms that align with energy market price signals to incentivize DER participation.
The discussion extends to necessary changes in transmission and distribution planning to optimize DER integration. This includes modifying planning processes to incorporate DER solutions as viable alternatives to traditional infrastructure projects, thus reducing costs and improving service reliability across the grid.
This presentation provides a strategic roadmap for leveraging DER as a value proposition in Alberta’s energy market, focusing on creating a sustainable, cost-effective, and reliable energy future.
