The Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The Department of Energy’s (DOE) IEDO is dedicated to improving energy and material efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness of manufacturing, including driving industrial decarbonization. We also invest in manufacturing innovation to accelerate and strengthen clean energy technology manufacturing, material supply chains, and the broader clean economy, supporting the growth of a modern, equitable manufacturing industry. Current priority topics for IEDO include industrial decarbonization, critical materials, sustainable materials, supply chains, energy storage manufacturing, and the energy-water nexus.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Better Plants program is a partnership within the Better Buildings Initiative that helps industrial organizations achieve significant energy efficiency improvements, emissions reductions, and increased resilience across their portfolios.

Additionally, DOE provides a national platform known as the Better Climate Challenge (BCC) for organizations to make public commitments to reduce their scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by at least 50% within 10 years, share replicable solutions, and leverage further technical expertise. The BCC program builds upon the success of the Better Buildings, Better Plants program and provides further value and national recognition to partnering organizations.

The Better Plants program works with leading U.S. manufacturers and water and wastewater treatment organizations to target ambitious energy, water, waste, and GHG reductions. Partners receive support in the form of technical assistance, tools, resources, and national recognition. The program works with nearly 300 manufacturers and utilities organization annually, representing every U.S. state and territory.
