Abstract:
The transition to a low-carbon economy is creating an unprecedented demand for skilled workers in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and climate technology. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the clean energy sector will generate 14 million new jobs by 2030, yet a skills gap persists, threatening the industry’s growth. Nearly 70% of companies in the renewable sector report difficulties in finding qualified workers.
This paper examines the mismatch between industry needs and workforce skills, particularly in roles such as solar PV installers, energy auditors, and energy efficiency specialists. Despite the demand, women make up only 32% of the global renewable energy workforce, highlighting gender disparities. Additionally, youth unemployment remains a challenge, with over 20% of young professionals in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) struggling to find jobs.
To bridge these gaps, this paper explores education and training strategies, including industry-academia partnerships, professional certification programs, and AI-driven digital learning platforms. It also evaluates policy measures such as green job tax incentives, government-funded apprenticeships, and upskilling initiatives. By leveraging best practices from the U.S., Europe, and MENA, this research provides actionable recommendations to build a workforce ready for the energy transition.
