Big Data = Big Opportunity for Energy Savings
IoT technology and real-time data is a game changer for buildings to
dramatically reduce energy consumption and improve building operations. IoT platforms create “sensory
systems” using cloud-connected smart sensors densely distributed in the ceiling
and under desks. These sensors collect data about a building’s
environment multiple times per second, providing insight to how buildings are
being used in real time.
In a recent study IoT technology demonstrated total lighting energy savings
of 88 percent across a range of space types, sizes, and geographies, in more
328 U.S. installations. Fifty percent of the energy savings came from
switching to LED lighting, and an additional 38 percent came from intelligent
lighting control. Occupancy data can integrate with building management
systems to adjust HVAC settings, providing additional energy savings of 35
percent or more.
This session will provide a high-level overview of the value of IoT
technology and big data and showcase a number of real-world applications with
real impact in reducing energy use and achieving sustainability goals.
