Efficient Shades: Program Viability and Rebates

Utility-run energy efficiency programs have recognized residential building envelope upgrades as an important avenue of savings. Insulating window shades have been advertised as energy-saving, but often with little documentation on how to quantify savings, resulting in challenges in how to incorporate insulated shades into electric and gas utility energy efficiency rebate programs. ADM Associates, Inc. conducted a simulation study to determine the feasibility of generating a deemed savings value and a reasonable magnitude of savings. This presentation will cover the balance between heat transmission and losses, the impact of baselines, and the challenges and benefits of installing residential insulated shades.
