Presentation Title:
Hydrogen Flame Visible Light Emissions
Track C: Alternative and Renewable Energy
Session C1: Hydrogen

Abstract:
As society shifts toward cleaner energy solutions, hydrogen has gained significant
attention due to its carbon-free emissions. However, pure hydrogen flames are nearly
invisible which presents safety and operational challenges. This talk presents our
research on the visible light emissions of hydrogen flames, and how they are affected
by impurities such as sodium and by other fuel components including natural gas
components. Measurements were conducted using a coflow burner which has a
standardized geometry that is widely used in the combustion research community. By
addressing these challenges, we aim to facilitate the safe integration of hydrogen as a
viable energy source in the transition to a cleaner future.
